Almost €40,000 in funding announced for Kilkenny outdoor amenities

Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys TD, announcing €3 million to develop over 300 forest parks, walking trails and outdoor amenities

Funding of almost €40,000 has been allocated by Government for works at five Coillte sites in Kilkenny, according to local Councillor Andrew McGuinness.

This comes as part of a €3 million package announced this morning (Friday) by Minister Heather Humphreys to develop and upgrade over 300 forest parks, walking trails and outdoor amenities. A sum of €2 million will be invested in improving and maintaining 280 recreational facilities on Coillte-owned lands right across the country. A further €1 million will be used to deliver 25 new outdoor projects such as walking trails, loops, boardwalks, Eco trails and carpark facilities.

Kilkenny amenities that will benefit from the funding are Castlemorris (€9216), Grenan (€4608), Jenkinstown and Ballyrafton (€11,520), Castlecomer/Ardra (€9216) and Brandon Hill (€4608).

The investment is part of a Strategic Partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Coillte that is designed to boost rural tourism and local economies.

Speaking to The Kilkenny People, Cllr. Andrew McGuinness  described the announcement as  “fantastic news for Kilkenny".

"It is very much welcome as these amenities are well used by locals and visitors alike. This funding will help to make great improvements for two amenities that are already considered fantastic recreation experiences in Kilkenny that we are very proud of," he said.

“I’m particularly happy for the local residents living near these amenities as it will be a great enhancement for their area. It is important that these facilities are always maintained with the highest standard and that we continue to enhance, improve and protect them so that we can all enjoy them and they are protected for future generations to enjoy them also,” concluded Cllr McGuinness.
