These boundary changes are solely proposed for elections to the Dáil

Proposed changes to constituency boundaries in Kilkenny are 'bizarre and illogical'

Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick

Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick (Fianna Fáil) has branded the recommended changes to constituency boundaries in County Kilkenny as 'bizarre and illogical'.

"I am shocked and saddened to see a large part of North Kilkenny being carved up and given to Tipperary," Cllr Fitzpatrick said.

"This decision is bizzare and illogical and I have great concern for the thousands of Kilkenny residents impacted by this recommendation."

The 13 Kilkenny EDs (that have been recommended to form part of a new Tipperary North constituency) include Baunmore, Galmoy, Glashare, Urlingford, Johnstown, Lisdowney, Balleen, Clomantagh, Tubbridbrittain, Freshford, Rathealy, Ballybeagh and Tullaroan.

Cllr Fitzpatrick is a local councillor in the Castlecomer Municipal District where these districts are located.

"The majority of people in these areas have lived here their whole lives and this news has come completely out of the blue, a huge shock to the system," he added.

In its report, The Electoral Commission stated that they decided on this option to minimise the number of breaches of county boundaries in the area and to provide for the highest level of continuity.

In doing so, Carlow-Kilkenny remains a five seater constituency, at the loss of 13 Kilkenny EDs to a new three-seater constituency (Tipperary North).
