Kenny's Well in Kilkenny City
Councillors at a recent meeting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District have pledged their support to finding funding to restore Kenny’s Well.
A motion was before this month’s meeting by Councillor John Coonan calling for an up to date position on the refurbishment and restoration of Kenny’s Well.
Cllr Coonan described the landmark as ‘a historic gem’.
“The wall at the end of the hill (at Kenny’s Well) fell into the River Breagagh in 2020. No action has been taken on the refurbishment works at Kenny’s Well,” he said.
Cllr Andrew McGuinness seconded the motion and described Kenny’s Well as ‘a fantastic amenity’ for the people of the Kilkenny.
“All we want is to bring it up to standard. We owe it to the local community to get funding to do this.”
Cllr Eugene McGuinness pointed out to the meeting that no works can take place until a licence is obtained from the National Monuments Service and from Fisheries Ireland.
Director of Services at Kilkenny County Council, Tim Butler said that a meeting is due to take place this month between the Heritage Officer, Conservation Officer, a representative from National Parks and Wildlife and a landscape architect on how best to proceed and he added that he would report back to members with an update and how best to secure funding to carry out the restoration works at Kenny’s Well.
