A total of €23,500 has been allocated by Government for works at the CIE bridge at O'Loughlin Road, according to local Councillor Andrew McGuinness who has campaigned for the upgrade since he was first elected.
The funding comes as part of a huge allocation of over €17million for rehabilitation works on regional and local roads and climate adaption and resilience works in Kilkenny, announced by Ministers Jack Chambers and Eamon Ryan.
Speaking to The Kilkenny People, Cllr Andrew McGuinness said, "I'm delighted with this news today as one of the very first proposals I put to Kilkenny County Council when I started in politics was to deal with the blindspot and bottleneck created by the bridge and the structural supports around it. It was a motion also proposed by my late grandfather and my father and others. So three generations have campaigned for this which is very frustrating but today we finally have good news.
"Last year we brought Minister Jack Chambers to Kilkenny to see the bridge and the issues surrounding it for himself. He stood their with us and watched as traffic struggled to navigate their way through the bridge. We also met with engineers from CIE who committed to a solution. Minister Chambers committed to helping us deal with the issue and today he has honoured that commitment and granted us the funding to help us to finally get the issues dealt with. I want to thank him for that," said Cllr Andrew McGuinness.
Deputy John McGuinness welcomed the €17 million in funding for Kilkenny.
Welcoming the announcement, Deputy John McGuinness said, "this is a massive investment into local and regional roads in Kilkenny City and County and also for the numerous bridge upgrade works throughout the county."
"There are many issues addressed within these allocations that I'm very happy to see having made numerous representations to the Minister personally such as the upgrade of the CIE Bridge at O'Loughlin Road, flooding issues at Glendine Heights and Lord Edward Street, the Metal Bridge at Muckalee, Inistiogue Bridge and Lavistown Bridge at the Sion Road among many others," he said.
"Minister Chambers made various commitments during his visits to Kilkenny and I showed him many of the issues so he could see for himself why we needed the funding. He has delivered for us today and I'm very grateful that Kilkenny has received its fair slice of this round of funding," concluded Deputy John McGuinness.
