Deputy John McGuinness
Deputy John McGuinness has welcomed this year's allocation of €12,360,426 for National Roads and Greenways in Kilkenny.
The funding was announced today as part of a total of over €440 million allocated to National Roads and Greenways nationwide. The allocations will be made to local authorities across the country through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
Deputy McGuinness said: “The substantial new funding allocated today is hugely important for National Roads and Greenways here in Kilkenny. The funding is part of the government’s investment in improving our national roads and greenways infrastructure. It will help ensure that our roads are safe, reliable and accessible for everyone who uses them.
“We will continue to invest in the maintenance and improvement of our road network to make it as safe as possible while improving regional connectivity and supporting regional economic development.
“Continued investment in Greenways is welcome, as they protect important habitats and provide corridors for people and wildlife. They help improve air and water quality and provide enjoyable and safe options for transportation, which reduces air pollution, so it is important they continue to receive appropriate investment.”
Minister Malcolm Noonan also welcomed the funding for the improvement and maintenance of national roads and the design of greenways.
"There are three strands to the funding announced today. Investment in road improvements, including footpath works, funding for road maintenance, and funding for design of new greenways. Most of the funding is earmarked for improvements to existing roads and footpaths, including €2 million for the N76 Callan bypass footpath in Kilkenny."
Green Party Councillor for Kilkenny City, Maria Dollard said she was happy to see €500,000 in funding to develop the SouthEast Greenway
“I’ve cycled the South East Greenway many times and I’m so happy to see funding being delivered by Minister Ryan’s Department to link the South East Greenway with Inistioge, Slieverue and Glenmore. The south of our county is extremely scenic, and I can see this project bringing huge enjoyment and economic benefits to the area. I want to congratulate our staff in the Parks Department in Kilkenny County Council for their hard work in this," she said.
