After 34 years in the force, Superintendent Aidan Brennan will retire from An Garda Síochana this weekend.
Affable and approachable, the superintendent is well-known and liked in Kilkenny having spent many years here in the role of inspector before returning as superintendent last year.
Originally from Roscommon, Supt Brennan graduated from Templemore in September 1980. He was first stationed in Fitzgibbon Street in Dublin, where he served for nearly eight years before he was promoted to sergeant in 1998. He returned to the Garda College in Templemore. While working there Supt Brennan was the national co-ordinator for introducing video recording of suspects in 2005, co-ordinating the national rollout and training the trainers in relation to same.
Supt Brennan quickly moved up the ranks and was promoted to inspector in 2005. In 2008 Supt Brennan was stationed in Kilkenny where he worked in the courts and was well-respected and admired for his diligence and attention to detail. In 2012 he was promoted to superintendent and was stationed in New Ross in Co Wexford for two years before moving on to Thomastown in 2014.
From 2015 to 2018 Supt Brennan worked out of the regional office, where he worked in the area of roads policing, before moving onto Carlow Garda Station where he served as superintendent for five years. A highlight of his time in Carlow was overseeing the National Ploughing Championships in 2019 along with the centenary celebrations.
In February 2023 Brennan returned to Kilkenny in the role of superintendent. He has garnered a reputation for his dedication to roads policing, increasing visibility and checkpoints on the roads across the city and county.
Chief Supt Anthony Pettit paid tribute to his colleague and friend and wished him well in his future endeavours.
“I would like to congratulate and thank Aidan for his 34 years of service in An Garda Síochána,” he said. “It has been our privilege to work with him over the past number of years. He has made a significant contribution to policing in Kilkenny and the South East, in particular in the area of roads policing and a deep involvement in the community. He has lived and worked in Kilkenny for a significant part of his career.
“Aidan has provided great leadership in the force, and likewise is always available to colleagues for a word of advice or support,” he added. “His experience and craft will be sorely missed in the organisation. On a personal level, we will all miss Aidan as a valued colleague and friend. We wish him and his family all the health and happiness in the future as he leaves An Garda Síochána and begins a new chapter of life.”
Supt Brennan also thanked his many friends in An Garda Síochana for all their help and support over the years.
