Additional gardaí are being deployed in Kilkenny over the bank holiday weekend as a road safety campaign gets underway.

There will be a significant increase in checkpoints, with mandatory intoxicant checkpoints in place on roads across the city and county.

The campaign gets underway at 7am (Thursday) until Tuesday morning. Extra speed cameras will also be in place over the bank holiday weekend.

Roads policing inspector, Paul Donohoe warned people who are socialising this weekend to be mindful of driver behaviour.

"A lot of people are travelling over the weekend. If you go out have a few drinks make sure to leave enough time the following morning before you drive as there will be early morning checkpoints.

"Never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs," he said.

Inspector Donohoe also warned people to slow down on the roads.

"We have had a dry spell and there is rain forecast which will make roads slippy so drivers need to make sure to leave a safe distance between their vehicle and the one in front of them," he added.
