A big-hearted mother whose husband and two sons live with Type 1 Diabetes is embarking on a fundraising drive to raise money for Diabetes Ireland and help build a support network in Kilkenny for families impacted by the condition.

Clara-based childcare provider, Natalie Grant, is teaming up with family and friends and others living with diabetes for a series of fundraisers which begins on Friday, November 2, with a get-together and live music from Thomas Jackman at The Village Inn.

Children from Clara National School will be among the stars of the show for a Gala Fashion Show which runs the following weekend, November 9, at Kilkenny’s Rivercourt Hotel. Among those who will share their experience of diabetes on the night are Dervla O’Malley, who will speak about the mental health impact of diabetes, and former Miss Kilkenny, Caitlin Raven.  Dialize clothing will also be available at the event.

“We hope to add other fundraisers between now and Christmas and in the new year,” Natalie Grant revealed. “In addition to the fashion show, I will be participating in the Great Wall of China Trek in October of next year, a challenging 36-kilometre journey over nine days. This trek is more than a personal challenge—it is a mission to raise awareness and crucial funds for Diabetes Ireland.

“The funds raised from all of the events will directly benefit the vital work Diabetes Ireland does in supporting individuals and families affected by diabetes,” she said.

“Diabetes affects millions of people worldwide, including many in our own community. My husband, Gary, and my two sons, Charlie and Cori, all have Type 1 Diabetes. The funds raised through these events will directly benefit Diabetes Ireland’s crucial work in research, advocacy and support services, helping to improve the lives of those living with diabetes,” she added.

While many other counties have a diabetes support group, Kilkenny doesn’t. Natalie hopes the fundraisers will also bring families together so they can support one another.

“When Cori was diagnosed, we didn’t know where to go to for support. That was 20 years ago.  I’ve been approached recently by another mother in the same predicament. She didn’t know where to go for answers or support.

“As well as raising funds and awareness, we are eager to feature children with diabetes in the Fashion Show. I’d encourage any parents interested to get in touch with me on nataliegrantfundraiser@gmail.com and we’d only be delighted to include them in the show.”

Tickets for the Village Inn event are available on the door and Fashion Show tickets are available from Natalie on her Facebook page Natalie Grantsfundraiser or by contacting her on 089-4669112 or on email nataliegrant1967@gmail.com
