Gardaí in Kilkenny have issued a statement about some of the comments they receive on their social media posts, using a recent post as an example.
"It would be very easy to be disheartened when you look at some comments on a recent post about an RPU vehicle being used to detect offences using ANPR," a garda spokesperson said.
"You would see an almost equal amount of negative and indeed sometimes hateful comments to balance out those that agree with our road safety agenda.

"You won't see many of the comments that are over the line and downright insulting, xenophobic, racist and paranoid and required to be removed."
Gardaí then noted that by looking deeper, they 'see that five people made the angry face emoji (to the post on Facebook) and three the laughing, meaning that the remaining over 1,200 are in support'.
The spokesperson concluded: "It used to be said that empty vessels make the most noise."
