Gardaí in Kilkenny are asking people to avoid unnecessary journeys, to check in on elderly and vulnerable neighbours and to ensure pets are not left outside as freezing conditions look set to continue until Friday.

A garda spokesperson said that people should avoid all unnecessary journeys and if they do have to drive to exercise extreme caution as roads that may appear clear may have black ice.

"Ensure your lights are on if driving in snow, and only drive a speed you know you can stop from in the area you can see to be clear and brake gently where possible," said the spokesperson

Gardaí are also warning motorists LED lights will get covered in snow, due to lack of heat adding that rubbing car wax onto your lights may help keep them clear.

"If you must travel make sure your vehicle has enough fuel to more than cover your journey and keep a coat, gloves and hat in your car. On secondary roads, be aware of the road verges which may be covered in snow and not obvious.

Gardaí are also asking the public to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours where possible and to ensure pets are not left outside at night, and ensure adequate shelter and insulation for them.
