Appeal to keep going as Kilkenny boy fitted for wheelchair

Wil suffers from a very rare condition

Hopes are high that a Go Fund Me appeal in aid of a little Kilkenny boy will keep growing as his condition takes a worrying turn.

Will Moore is just four years old and he suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) — a condition so rare just 110 people in Ireland are thought to be living with it.

DMD is a progressive, muscle-wasting condition and has no cure. Most sufferers will lose their ability to walk by the age of eight or 10.

Will has been found suitable for clinical trials at Boston Children’s Hospital, in the USA, a treatment that could stop his condition from getting any worse. The catch is the cost - up to $4 million.

Unfortunately for Will, and his family, he recently lost the ability to walk for almost three weeks. His grandmother, Sarka, told the Kilkenny People that they are delighted to see the little boy is taking steps again, but the time has come for him to be fitted for a wheelchair.

She repeated her appeal to the people of Kilkenny to please support the family’s GoFundMe campaign. It can be found by searching ‘4Mill4Will’ on GoFundMe or click HERE.

Will's wheelchair has been ordered now, based on the fitting they did at Enable Ireland. Sarka told us: "He got to try one there, and his mum filmed it—he looked so happy! I think it made him feel proud that he could move by himself without needing to be pushed."
Recently, Will has also gotten a standing frame for home, which is used to help stretch and support his muscles. His mum helps strap him in, and he stands for about 45 minutes to an hour each day while playing or keeping busy at a little table attached to it. It seems to be helping, and he’s adjusting well, according to his family

Doing their part for the appeal are two young men from Kilkenny who have set out to cycle from Dublin to Istanbul!

The journey will see them cross parts of the world they have never seen before, on a route of about 4,000km, in order to help raise funds for Will’s urgently needed treatment.

Sean Lawlor and Cillian Larkin are currently in Split, Croatia with their next big city stop being Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

However, their trip hasn’t been without difficulty.
“The worst part was definitely the bad luck we experienced in Milan. I had my phone pickpocketed and Sean had his locked bike stolen during the night. It was far from ideal but we managed to sort out a used phone and bike,” Cillian updated.

The set back hasn’t deterred the Kilkenny pair, who are keen to finish what they’ve started.
“So far, this trip has been a great experience. Cycling through countries and seeing the smaller towns and hidden gems has been fascinating. Also, meeting new people along the way has been a great experience,” Cillian continued.

“We set off from Dublin last month and knew we couldn’t settle for any less than Istanbul. All the donations towards William’s treatment and the awareness we are raising for DMD has been the main motivator.

“We have about 1500km left of our trip and aim to complete it in the next three weeks. We would like to thank everyone who has donated so far and hopefully the GoFundMe stays growing for William,” Cillian concluded. Donate to Cycle for Will HERE
