Tony Joyce receives the Melvin Jones Award from the chair of Lions Ireland, District Governor Marian McGreevy
Tony Joyce from Kilkenny Lions Club received the Melvin Jones Award from the chair of Lions Ireland, District Governor Marian McGreevy, at the Lions Convention in Monaghan at the weekend.
The award is one of the highest humanitarian awards by Lions International. Tony received the award for his outstanding work on the recent Lions Online Climate Change event for Transition Year students.
As many as 9,000 students participated from schools all over the Island of Ireland. The event was titled The Future is Brighter with Climate Action.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of the online event was to educate and engage secondary school students with climate change, climate change science, mitigation, adaptation and what can individuals, schools and groups do.
Mr Joyce is only the second person from Kilkenny Lions Club to receive the award in nearly 60 years since its establishment in 1967, with the late Brian O’Callaghan being the first recipient. Mr Joyce has been involved in community work for a long number of years in Kilkenny.
He was formerly the Head Brewer in the Smithwicks Brewery and is presently chair of the Board of Management of Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny.
