Callout for participants for unique community event in Kilkenny

All are welcome to take part in the free event

Local residents are invited to take part in a special community workshop in Freshford, celebrating the rich heritage, folklore, and biodiversity of our hedgerows.

As part of the Know Your Hedgerows Project, an initiative of Kilkenny LEADER Partnership, this event aims to highlight the vital role hedgerows play in our landscape — not only as important biodiversity
corridors, but also as living archives of local history and tradition.

Hedgerows have long marked townland boundaries and pathways, shaping how communities interact with the land. Through historical maps, participants will learn how to uncover the stories hidden within these features — from ancient placenames to forgotten routes and field patterns. These maps offer a unique window into the past, helping us understand how our landscape has evolved over time.

The workshop will also explore the importance of community stewardship in protecting and maintaining hedgerows for future generations. By caring for these natural boundaries, we support wildlife habitats, preserve cultural heritage, and strengthen our connection to place.

Organisers are calling on attendees to bring along their own local knowledge, stories, and memories — whether about a particular hedge, field, or placename. These shared insights are a valuable part of
preserving Kilkenny’s rich local heritage.

The Know Your Hedgerows Workshop will take place at the Loop Community Café in Freshford.

The workshops will take place in the community cafe on March 25 and April 1 at 7pm.

All are welcome to attend. To book or more info text 086 3104008.
