Spate of Robberies - The local community has been subjected to a spate of callous house robberies and the perpetrators do not give a concern of who they are inflicting their horrible deeds on.

Spate of Robberies - The local community has been subjected to a spate of callous house robberies and the perpetrators do not give a concern of who they are inflicting their horrible deeds on.

With the country in deep recession it was expected that burglaries throughout the land would increase but it seems that all the break-ins in the locality, is by organised groups who use the motorway system as a quick entrance and exit. The feeling locally is that these groups are not acting alone, they need accomplices who have local knowledge and who obviously pass on this knowledge for a profit.

Locals in Cuffesgrange have decided to follow other communities in their bid to combat robberies and are setting up a texting system which will fore warn people of suspicious cars and suspicious activity in their area. In the last few weeks there have been eleven reported break-ins in the parish.

SHOT PUTT - Local athlete Brendan Hyland, Ballybur has achieved a remarkable feat in the last few weeks. The Kilkenny City Harriers runner was asked to take up the shot putt in February and started training for the Leinster finals, only two weeks before they were held. The Leinster Juvenile Indoor Athletics Championships were held in the Athlone IT International Arena on March 9. Brendan competed in the under-19 shot putt event, winning the silver medal with a throw of 11.34 metres. Brendan progressed to the Athletics Association of Ireland Finals, also held in Athlone, on March 24, and he again took silver with a throw of 11.76 metres. Brendan who is an all round sportsman prefers handball to all sports but maybe his future lies in the shot putt.

SOCCER - Fort Rangers Under-11’s visited Castlecomer on Saturday to play Deen Celtic and unluckily suffered they first defeat of the season. In a hard fought tie it was 0-0 at the break with Fort having the better of the few chances. The breakthrough came from a well taken corner, which was nodded home at the back post, mid way through the second half, and try as they might with attack after attack, Fort could not breakthrough a stern Deen Celtic rearguard. Fort still sit top of the league and with 1 game left to play against a strong Freshford side ,they will need a victory to keep them ahead of the chasing pack.
