Window displays handmade knitted hats from Knit Happens’ Heart Strings Christmas appeal for premature babies and sick children

Bollard's Bar Kilkenny has installed a unique Christmas window featuring all the handmade knitted hats donated to date to local group Knit Happens’ Heart Strings Christmas appeal.

The local knitting group aims to collect as many knitted hats as possible for Crumlin Children’s Hospital (St. John’s Ward), the National Maternity Hospital (Holles Street) and St. Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny (NICU) to keep premature babies and ill children suffering hair loss from chemotherapy, warm this winter.

The group said: “Huge thanks to Keith for being so mega cool!! Come by and have a look, it looks fab at night! And if you wish to make some hats and donate them all the info can be found on our website Knithappenskilkenny.ie/causes."

One star knitter, Renate has already knitted a whopping 50 hats for premature babies at St. Luke’s Hospital NICU, Kilkenny bringing the total to 172 hats crafted for the campaign to date.

Interested knitters can drop their finished hats into Bollard's Bar, Mondays to Sundays during opening hours. Or they can join the group on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-8.30pm to knit in a companionable group setting. Convivial knitting, crochet, chats, chin wags and craic are guaranteed.

Adults of all levels are welcome to take part and patience with newbies is a hallmark of the group’s inclusive ethos. Also their venue, Bollards Bar, is dog friendly so if your pooch wants to knit then the more the merrier.

Some materials are available for those of starting off or picking up the needles again after a few years. Males of the species are also encouraged to get their needles out too. There are already one or two brave pioneers already paving the way!
