An enlightening talk on the Kilkenny Civil War 100th Anniversary Calendar 2023 by renowned author and historian Jim Maher kept the audience entertained for almost two hours in the Club House Hotel recently.
One could hear a pin drop such was the interest when Jim Maher addressed a captivated audience at the very successful calendar launch.
Jim said calendar author Jim Hayes did his best to keep the very interesting stories in the calendar balanced as not to show favouritism to either side in the tragic Civil War.
He said it was a pity the Civil War happened at all, that it was a tragedy really but you could not blame either side for starting the war as they were pressed into it by Britain.
He also said there are a lot of excellent photos in the calendar, some he never came across in all his time researching and writing about Irish history.
Jim Hayes, calendar author, thanked Jim Maher for launching the the calendar and for an excellent nights entertainment on his talk on the civil war and Irish history in general from the period 1916 to 1923.
Ian Brennan, proprietor of the Club House Hotel, was also praised for providing an excellent venue for the launch of the calendar.
Jim also thanked everybody in attendance for their enthusiasm and for engaging in the questions and answer session after the launch.
There was praise also for those helping with the sales, including shops in the city and county.
Wonderfully colourful and informative, with original pictures and research included, the calendar is a must for local history enthusiasts.
