Piltown 2-16 St Patrick’s 1-18

Piltown closed a fine league championship campaign with a hard-earned victory in the JJ Kavanagh Junior Hurling Championship Shield Final at John Locke Park, Callan, on Saturday evening, overcoming St Patrick’s by the narrowest of margins in a tightly contested match.

In a game that ebbed and flowed throughout, Piltown displayed tremendous character, resilience and composure to secure a memorable one-point victory and bring the Shield back to the club.

Piltown made the perfect start, with DJ Knox opening the scoring inside the first minute before Ronan Ryan converted a free. The south Kilkenny side then struck for the opening goal after just three minutes, Billy O’Callaghan finishing a fine individual effort to leave Piltown 1-02 ahead.

St Patrick’s quickly settled into the contest, however, and began to make their mark on the scoreboard. Sean Brennan found the net, while Mark Doheny proved particularly accurate from placed balls.

Jack Morrissey and Brennan also contributed valuable scores as St Patrick’s turned the game on its head and moved two points clear midway through the opening half.

Piltown refused to be shaken by the setback and continued to threaten the St Patrick’s defence. Their persistence was rewarded in the 23rd minute when Cian Kinsella found the net, keeping Piltown firmly in contention.

The exchanges remained intense, with both sides battling fiercely for possession and neither willing to concede an inch. Piltown’s defence, led by Darragh Walsh, worked tirelessly to contain the St Patrick’s attack, while the midfield and forward lines fought hard to create opportunities.

Ronan Ryan’s accuracy from placed balls proved crucial, as the Piltown forward continued to punish any indiscipline from the St Patrick’s defence.

His contribution kept the scoreboard ticking over in a contest where every score mattered.

At the interval, St Patrick’s held a narrow advantage, with the sides separated by just two points, setting the stage for a fascinating second half.

Piltown made the better start after the restart, with Andrew Phelan raising a white flag to reduce the deficit. Ryan continued to be central to Piltown’s attacking efforts, delivering an outstanding individual scoring performance that would ultimately see him finish with 0-10, including nine frees.

St Patrick’s remained determined to hold their ground. Mark Doheny, Rob Doheny and Jack Morrissey kept the scoreboard moving, ensuring that Piltown could never settle into a comfortable rhythm. The intensity of the contest was reflected in the close exchanges, with both teams trading scores and the lead changing hands.

As the game entered its closing stages, Piltown dug deep. Scores from DJ Knox, Niall O’Brien and Ronan Ryan helped maintain their slender advantage, but St Patrick’s continued to press for an equaliser.

With the final whistle approaching, every possession carried significance, and Piltown’s ability to remain composed under pressure was proving decisive. Aaron Kinsella then delivered a vital late point, helping to preserve Piltown’s narrow lead as St Patrick’s launched one final search for parity.

Referee Richard Dowling brought proceedings to a close shortly afterwards, confirming a hard-fought 2-16 to 1-18 victory for Piltown.

It was a determined and committed performance from the Piltown players, who battled for every ball and showed excellent resilience whenever St Patrick’s threatened to overturn the result. Their scoring threat, defensive work and composure in the closing stages ultimately proved decisive.
