The local side are set to begin life in FAI competition in Carlow as Kilkenny fans will have to wait a bit longer for Buckley Park to host again

CK United have learned their opponents for their first ever men’s senior fixture next month, however there will be some disappointment locally as the playing surface at Buckley Park is not yet up to standard for the new FAI National League.

United will host Newbridge Town on Saturday, August 29 during the league’s opening weekend with the game taking place at SETU Carlow Sports Campus instead of the return of Buckley Park as was hoped over the last few months.

The club told The Kilkenny People that the surface “needs a lot of work to get it up to National League standard” but that the stadium “is very much in our plans once the venue meets the standard required.”

After opening day of Group 3, United will travel to Killarney Celtic on September 12, before welcoming Waterford’s Villa FC to Carlow on September 19 followed by a trip to UCC Soccer to round out the opening half of the season.

The reverse fixtures will consist of a home encounter with Killarney Celtic on October 3, a visit to Newbridge on October 17, the arrival of UCC to SETU on October 24 and the final game of the league season away at Villa FC on October 31.

United will hope that their season will continue into the semi-finals which will consist of the winners of the three groups and best runner-up.
