The best and brightest of Kilkenny’s private gardens, housing estates and streets, beautiful business premises and outstanding environmentalists were feted on Monday evening this week at the annual Keep Kilkenny Beautiful (KKB) awards night.
They defied the inclement weather to turn out for the special event at the Rivercourt Hotel. Heritage Minister Malcolm Noonan, Mayor of Kilkenny Joe Malone, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council Michael Doyle. Keynote speaker was Caitriona Corr, Kilkenny County Council’s cycling officer.
The city centre pollinator award went to Butler Gallery, John’s Quay, while the commercial pollinator award was given to Kilkenny Retail park, Loughboy.
Best Commercial Flower Display
Winner:Hibernian Hotel.
Highly commended: Tynans Bridge House.
Most improved commercial premises
Winner: Bridge House, 89 John Street Lower (Rivercourt Hotel).
Highly commended: Club House Hotel, Patrick Street.
Best Shopfront
Winner: Tower and Castle, 60 John Street Upper.
Highly commended: Billy Byrnes, 39 John street Upper.
Best signage
Winner: Siopa Cuinne Grincell, 9 Irishtown.
Highly commended:- Murphy Bespoke Jewellers, 86 High Street.
Best hospitality
Winner: Kyteler’s Inn, Kieran Street.
Highly commended: The Book and Coffee shop, William Street.
Special award
Market Cross Shopping Centre.
This award was in recognition of IBAL judges remarks 2023: “The cleanest shopping centre this surveyor has ever seen! There wasn’t even a cigarette butt to be seen. Some of the bins provided the opportunity to separate waste into recycling.”
Excellence in Environmental Service
This award went to Kilkenny County Council for conservation of the Shee Alms house and the Historic Well at Canal Walk, both completed in 2023.
