Pictures: Kilkenny gathering with a global feel as Failte Isteach celebrates end of term

People from all over the world came together to celebrate the Failte Isteach end of term in Kilkenny just before Christmas.

Described by organisers as a United Nations gathering, it was great to see people socialise and share their international culture with laughter, food, music and dance, as everyone mingled and enjoyed the positive atmosphere.

“We don’t put labels on people here,” said co-ordinator Theresa Delahunty. “We’re all together in our common humanity, just having a fun morning, while at the same time respecting and valuing the diversity of the many cultures present.”

The celebrations also had room to recognise all who make the project possible. Fifteen volunteer tutors were applauded by Stephen Murphy, Director of Services at the Fr McGrath Centre, who said that without their commitment, the service would be much the poorer.

Certificates of achievement were presented to two South East Technological University work experience students, Holly and Molly, for their sterling work during their placement. There was also acknowledgement of Kilkenny Leader Partnership who have supported the project since its inception.

The Failte Isteach and Immigrant Support service reaches out to people from diverse communities and is a first step for many on the road to their final destination of education, employment and integration with the local community. Every week, a panel of volunteer tutors teach conversational English to help those with little or no English to acquire a vocabulary sufficient for everyday use. It is recognised that, without the language, advancement and integration is greatly impeded. Over this past year more than 100 people have participated in the Fr McGrath Project.

Rounding off the morning’s festivities, a presentation was made to co-ordinator Theresa Delahunty by Stephen Murphy, Director of Services and Mike Kelly, chairman of the board of St Canice’s Community Action, for her vision and commitment over the past 12 years.
