Pictures: Slievenamon Association Kilkenny hosts retired hurlers at Christmas party

The Slievenamon Association Kilkenny held its Christmas Party on Friday, November 18 at the Pembroke Hotel in Kilkenny.

Presentations were made on the night to retired senior players Padraic and Brendan Maher, All Ireland minor hurling winning management and also to retiring county secretary Tim Floyd.
The association has been in existence since 1991 and in that time has regularly distributed funds to local charitable organisations. On this occasion the organisation chosen is Amber Womens Refuge Centre in Kilkenny.

“We are delighted to make a contribution to the excellent work carried out by Amber Womens Refuge Centre, an organisation that deserves all our support,” said Association Chairman John Sheehy.

On behalf of himself and Brendan Maher, Padraic Maher thanked the association for inviting them to their function and making presentations to them. He said being in Kilkenny brought back memories to them of epic hurling matches between Kilkenny and Tipperary in Nowlan Park. He added it was great to come back and meet some of the Kilkenny players that we have made strong friendships with over the years.

Lisa Morris, Manager, Amber Womens Refuge Centre Kilkenny said that they were so grateful to the Slievenamon Association Kilkenny for choosing to support Amber.

“We rely on the support of local organisations, businesses and individuals to help us to close the shortfall in funding we experience every year,” she said. "All monies raised will be used to protect and support local women and children both at the refuge and in our outreach work with families in the community.

“Thank you also to MC Paul Collins and Balllywire Media for producing a video for us for the event to highlight the effects of domestic violence and abuse and to John Ryan from the Pembroke Hotel for hosting the event. These awareness raising and fundraising efforts are vital in helping local victim-survivors.”
