Niall Dollard of Kilkenny weather who spoke to the Kilkenny People about the local impact of global warming in November
Flooding in Kilkenny was a major news story in November. On November 1, the River Nore burst its banks in both Thomastown and Inistioge with the R700 out of Thomastown impassable due to floodwater. Marsh’s Street in the town also flooded while a number of commercial and residential premises flooded near Inistioge bridge.
The previous Friday, Freshford had experienced flash floods with water peaking at a depth of four feet. Sudden, intense and torrential downpours led to flooding across Kilkenny and left many roads impassable.
Local weatherman Niall Dollard said that October 2022 was the wettest on record in Kilkenny and explained how the real effects of global warming were increasingly making an impact on local weather. Even for a land-locked county like Kilkenny, the issues facing us about rising sea and water levels are now terrifyingly real.
