An enthusiastic crowd of over 200 people gathered in the Newpark Hotel for the Mayor and Lions Club Table Quiz, with all the proceeds going to the Amber Women’s Refuge Centre.
Fifty teams of four participated with the top three receiving prizes. The MC was George Candler who ran proceedings with his normal jovial humour and the organising committee was joint chairs Carmel Slater and Pat O’Hanlon together with Gerry McGovern, Pat Cahill, Philip Tierney, and Marie Kennedy. There was also a raffle with several sponsored prizes.
The quiz and associated raffle raised significant funds for the centre.
Transition Year students from Kilkenny College, under the supervision of TY Co-ordinator Gerry Clarke, helped with the organisation on the night and were well received and did their school proud.
Quizmaster Pat O’Hanlon devised a series of challenging questions which tested the teams.
Scorekeepers Eddie Holohan and Gerry McGovern updated the scores at the end of each round and displayed them on a big screen.
Participants’ feedback was that it was a thoroughly enjoyable social occasion for a worthy cause and was very professionally run by the Lions Club organising committee and other Lions helpers who helped on the night including Maeve O’Flynn, Joe Hickey, Kieran Bollard, John Kelly, Padraig Keegan and Mary O’Hanlon.
Mayor Joe Malone, who was unavoidably absent, sent his best wishes via video to all the teams.
He thanked the Lions Club for organising the quiz and thanked all those local organisations who supported the event. He added that both himself and the Lions Club were delighted to have chosen Amber Women’s Refuge Centre as the recipient of the proceeds.
Marie Kennedy, President Kilkenny Lions Club, thanked the Lions committee who organised the event under the Joint Chairmanship of Pat O’Hanlon and Carmel Slater. She thanked and named the sponsors who generously donated prizes for the quiz and raffle and thanked the Transition Year students in Kilkenny College for helping with the organisation on the night.
She was delighted that Amber Women’s Refuge Centre was the recipient of the proceeds as she was a founding member and appreciates the great work they do throughout the year. She concluded by thanking everybody for supporting the event.
Lisa Morris, manager of Amber Women’s Refuge, also expressed her gratitude.
GRATEFUL
“We are very grateful to Mayor Joe Malone and the members of Kilkenny Lions Club for selecting Amber as the beneficiary of this year’s table quiz. As a chronically underfunded local service we rely on the support of local fundraisers,” she said.
“All monies raised will be used for the planned redevelopment of the refuge garden, which will result in the development of a sensory garden for the women and children who use our service and the much needed upgrading of our playground.”
