In the heart of Mooncoin lies Mooncoin Residential Care Centre, a beacon of warmth, care, and compassion for older people and their families. As it celebrates its 20th anniversary, the journey of this family-run establishment known for its dedication, innovation, and strong community spirit has been both rewarding and challenging in equal measure.
Throughout Mooncoin Residential Care Centre, the values of family, community, and excellent care are evident, creating a legacy that will last for years. Residents and staff recently celebrated the milestone with an afternoon of music, tea, and cakes.
Set up two decades ago by seasoned professionals, Breeda O'Reilly and Mary Blake, both registered nurses with extensive experience. For 20 years Breeda O’Reilly managed the care centre. She was equipped with a postgraduate diploma in gerontological nursing from Trinity College Dublin, with clinical experience gained at St James's Hospital in Dublin.
Breeda retired from the position of Director of Nursing in 2019 when Trish Curran stepped into the role. Trish is supported in her role by Lisa Comerford, Assistant Director of Nursing and Margaret Fagan, Clinical Nurse Manager both of whom have been working in the nursing home for well over 10 years.
One thing is certain: Breeda finds immense joy in working with older people. "Older people are simply amazing," she says with a smile. "They carry so much history with them. It's truly remarkable to hear about all the experiences they've had throughout their lives. Each story is like a treasure trove of wisdom and memories."
"It all started 20 years ago this March," Breeda says. From its modest origins, Breeda envisioned a haven where older people could thrive, surrounded by love and support. With a background in nursing and a deep-seated admiration for older generations, she seized the opportunity to create a space that truly catered to their needs.
The journey towards establishing Mooncoin Residential Care Centre was a collaborative effort within the family. Donal, Breeda’s husband, played a pivotal role in designing and project-managing the construction of the nursing home.
“With his expertise and attention to detail, he ensured that every aspect of the facility was tailored to provide the utmost comfort and functionality for its residents," Breeda recalls.
