WATCH: Shocking flooding causes panic and damage on John's Quay in Kilkenny City

Repairs are under way today on the road which has sustained considerable damage due to the burst mains

Work is under way on John's Quay to repair the road and pavement after a burst water main caused considerable damage and flooding late on Friday night.

Few of the road's current residents would have been present in the days prior to the flood relief scheme, when the River Nore bursting its banks was a regular peril. They were in no doubt of the danger on Friday however, when the water was at their doors, and had made it as far as the door of the Home Rule Club. Some were woken late by others when flooding reached their front steps.

Around 11.20pm, returning revellers came upon the scene of chaos as they struggled to access their Airbnb. Water in some of the lower-lying places was close to knee-deep. Frantic efforts were made to contact Fire Service and Irish Water as gallons of water gushed from the broken pipe and burst tarmacadam.

At one stage, an inebriated man arrived via the Lady Desart pedestrian bridge. He began cavorting deliriously in the floodwaters, and disclosing all kinds of ailments and intentions. When two gardaí made their presence known, he changed his mind and told the assembled crowd he was actually fine, and was going home to bed.

The water stopped shortly after midnight and soon receded. The works to repair the pipe and road are ongoing, with some disruption expected.
