WATCH: First time Kilkenny candidate's 'total surprise' on being elected after first count

Joe Sheridan (Fianna Fáil) has been elected as a councillor for the Callan-Thomastown Local Electoral Area after the first count.

He was elected alongside his party colleague Peter 'Chap' Cleere (who topped the poll, and Fine Gael's Joe Lyons.

It was Sheridan's very first election and he spoke to Kilkenny Live reporter Christopher Dunne about how being elected after the first count was a 'complete surprise'.

"It's incredible," he said. "A huge thanks to everybody who voted for me."

He stated that he believes he can bring a fresh perspective to the council chamber over the next few years and commended the work done by outgoing Fianna Fáil councillor Matt Doran.
