Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae was the only alternative candidate to be nominated to be Taoiseach during this Tuesday's proceedings in Dáil Éireann.
He was formally proposed by his brother Danny Healy-Rae and seconded by Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath.
In proposing his brother, Danny Healy-Rae said "democracy shouldn't be taken for granted" and that he believes he is "well capable of carrying out the task" as he "knows what the people need and what they are concerned about".
Deputy McGrath added: "I believe he is a man who will listen to the people - he has been in politics since he was ten years of age - canvassing in by-elections and ag éisteacht leis na daoine, listening to the people."
