Kilkenny’s local authority will be keeping a close eye on the weather forecasts this winter, as part of the annual winter road maintenance programme.

Presenting the plan for keeping main roads safe to travel on in icy conditions, the area engineer for Callan Thomastown municipal district, Declan Murphy, said decisions will be made not just on temperature forecasts.

Municipal District Chairperson, Councillor Deirdre Cullen, asked how bad it had to get for the non-main, local road to be salted.

Mr Murphy said temperatures could fall to minus four or minus five degrees but if conditions were dry there might be no frost, on the other hand rainy conditions and a drop to just minus one could cause major road issues.

The county council staff will closely monitor Met Eireann, he said and a call will be made depending on the forecast. “I like to say we get it right 99% of the time,” Mr Murphy assured councillors.

“Thanks in advance to all who go out salting on those treacherous nights when nobody wants to be out,” Cllr Cullen said.

Maps of the priority one, two and three routes were set out for councillors. Small, local roads are priority three.
