The community of Callan has been united in sadness, in recent days, following the news that popular local lady Hazel Hennessy had passed away.

Hazel was a familiar sight to all in the town, walking or with her bicycle, friendly and always ready for a quick chat when you met her.

Originally from Collins Park in Callan, in recent times Hazel had lived just around the corner, at Mount Carmel.

Involved in all aspects of life in Callan, Hazel gave generously of her time to help others. She worked as a caretaker at Callan parish hall and helped out with the Blood Transfusion Service visits there. She also helped out in the parish and was involved with Droichead Family Resource Centre.

In the past Hazel played soccer with Callan and spent time as a local scout leader.

Tributes have poured in for Hazel after her unexpected, but peaceful, passing earlier this week, with locals saying she will be missed.

One friend recalled how Hazel "always had a smile and a chat for all" and another that she was a "gentle, kind person". Expressing condolences to Hazel's family another tribute spoke about how Hazel was "a kind, caring and hardworking lady".

Hazel passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. She is survived by and sadly missed by her loving family, her brothers Joseph and Noel and her twin brother Patrick, her nephews William, Declan, Robert and Owen, her cousin Linda, relatives, neighbours and her many, many friends.

Funeral arrangements will be made available later. May Hazel rest in peace.
