Kilkenny County Council has granted planning permission for Southend United's proposed new all-weather synthetic playing pitch, subject to certain conditions.

Kilkenny based soccer club Southend United have been granted planning permission for a proposed new all-weather synthetic playing pitch.

The development will also consist of high perimeter fencing, a low retaining wall, stormwater soakaways, landscaping and all associated site works,

The permission, which was granted by Kilkenny County Council, may be subject to certain conditions.

The news follows developments for the Kilkenny & District League in recent weeks.

In September, Kilkenny & District Soccer League have been granted planning permission (subject to conditions) for the redevelopment of the Derdimus Park site just outside Kilkenny City.

According to the planner’s report submitted with the application, the site is bound by agricultural lands to the west and north, a nursing home to the northeast, a Kilkenny City FC (Buckley Park) sports ground to the east and residential units to the south.

Proposed plans included an ‘upgrade of the existing grass pitch to a new full size Astro pitch (100 x 66m) with associated drainage, flood lighting, fencing and ball stop netting’.

Also sought by the applicant was permission for all associated site development works.

The planning application was lodged back in July 2026 and the decision was made to grant permission (conditionally) on September 21, 2026.

Amongst the seven conditions, assurances are being sought that “all light shall be cowed away from the site surrounds and focussed on the pitch only so as to limit light spill” in a bid to “ensure that excessive light spill or direct glare does not adversely affect adjoining residential properties or the public road.”

Further to this, “no pitch lights shall be operated past 10.30pm without the express consent of the planning authority.”
