A busy lane in Callan is set to be declared a ‘public road’ by the county council.

The route, at the back of the local SuperValu car park, will become the official entrance to a new housing development.

Known as the ‘back entrance’ to the car park, the area connects to Lower Green Lane.

The area proposed as an official public road stretches from the junction for a length of about 64 metres.

District chairman, Cllr Joe Lyons, proposed the Notice of Intention to Declare a Public Road be published. He was seconded by Cllr Deirdre Cullen.

Area engineer Declan Murphy explained the reason for the move. Kilkenny County Council has purchased the development at the back of the car park. With further development proposed for the old co-op building, which backs onto this site, the new road has the potential to run all the way down to Mill Lane.
