Minister announces new security allowance scheme for local councillors - Kilkenny Live

Damage done to home of Cllr Eugene McGuinness in January

The Minster for State for Local Government and Planning has announced a new allowance of up to €2,500 for local councillors to provide for measures to enhance their personal physical security.

The announcement comes following a number of security and safety incidents experienced by councillors.

In January, an incident took place at the home of Kilkenny councillor Eugene McGuinness, where thousands of euros worth of damage was done to the windows and his van.

Regulations signed by Minster Kieran O' Donnell and Minister Paschal Donohoe set out the details of the scheme.

Councillors will be able to claim up to 50% of their personal security costs, to a maximum value of €2,500, whichever is the lesser amount.

Eligible expenses under the scheme include the installation of intruder alarms, CCTV and the provision of panic buttons/GPS-tracked panic button app.

The allowance will be made on a once-off, vouched basis and will be administered by Local Authorities.
