Bridge Street, Callan

At least one person has been seriously injured following a fracas that took place in broad daylight in Callan, County Kilkenny yesterday.

The incident occurred at lunchtime on Bridge Street, in the centre of the town, outside a number of businesses.

It is reported that one man was beaten with a baseball bat and was later taken to hospital by ambulance.

Traffic on the one-way street was backed up and witnesses described cars going in both directions.

Motorists caught in the ensuing traffic hold-up witnessed the incident, as did local secondary school students, many of whom were left upset by what they saw.
