A scheme to install electric vehicle charging stations across Kilkenny has begun.
Thomastown, Graignamanagh and Callan will each have two new fast charging stations under the plan.
Area Engineer Declan Murphy informed local councillors at last week’s Callan Thomastown Municipal District meeting that the six charging stations have been installed but are not turned on for use yet.
Two charge points have been installed in each town - at the quayside in Thomastown, the Fair Green in Graignamanagh and also the Fair Green in Callan.
Mr Murphy explained the charging stations are 50kWh ‘fast’ charging stations. They are a good addition to the towns.
Cllr Michael Doyle said it was great to see the charge points being installed and asked if Inistioge could be considered for a charging station.
They didn’t want to deter people visiting Woodstock, he said. Electric vehicles are a popular mode of transport these days.
Cllr Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere said it was “fantastic” to have the charging points in Graignamanagh and they are “absolutely needed.”
He asked about the possibility of feedback on the usage of the points, in three to six months, so they could consider increasing the number of charging points where needed, to ‘future proof’ the infrastructure.
Two charging points have been installed in Kilkenny City and three further charging points are now planned for north Kilkenny.
Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick has welcomed a proposal to install a charge point in Urlingford, Ballyragget and Castlecomer.
