Kilkenny TD receives peer backing for significant promotion

A familiar voice in Kilkenny politics has backed a local TD for a high-profile position in the new Dáil.

Fianna Fáil councillor Joe Malone told Kilkenny Live that he will be writing to Micheal Martin and other party officials to request they consider John McGuinness for a senior ministry or the vacant Ceann Comhairle position.

Deputy McGuinness was re-elected in the recent general election, with the first candidate to reach the quota and topping the poll.

He has been a member of Dáil Eireann since 1997. In that time he has chaired two important committees - the Public Account Committee and the Finance Committee. He also served as Minister for Trade and Commerce from 2007 to 2009.
