Kilkenny TD, John McGuinness commented it was a 'privilege and honour' to be elected to the role of Leas-Cheann Comhairle when addressing colleagues in the Dáil shortly after the parliamentary vote on Wednesday.
"I'm not an overnight success, I was elected to Kilkenny Corporation in 1979 and it took me 15 years to convince them to elect me Mayor of Kilkenny City. I was elected here in 1997 and it has taken me this length of time to convince you to elect me as Leas Ceann-Comhairle," Deputy McGuinness jokingly told the Dáil.

"It's a great privilege and honour. It's a job I will do to the very best of my ability in a very impartial way," the Fianna Fáil TD added.
