Kilkenny TD John McGuinness misses out on top government job

The election of Ceann Comhairle took place in the Dáil on Wednesday afternoon
History has been made in Dáil Eireann this afternoon (Wednesday) following the election of Verona Murphy as Ceann Comhairle. The Wexford Independent TD is the first female to hold the position in the history of the State.
However, it was disappointment for local TD John McGuinness who missed out on election to the post.
After the first count, the Kilkenny TD finished with the least number of votes (21), six behind the incumbent Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl (27).
Deputy McGuinness was re-elected in the recent general election, with the first candidate to reach the quota and topping the poll.
He has been a member of Dáil Eireann since 1997. In that time he has chaired two important committees - the Public Account Committee and the Finance Committee. He also served as Minister for Trade and Commerce from 2007 to 2009.
The Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil is the chamber's chairperson. They are expected to be impartial in their work, no matter what their party political background, and do not take part in debates. The sitting Ceann Comhairle does not need to seek re-election.
