LATEST: Kilkenny GAA confirm appointment to vacant senior role

Kilkenny GAA has confirmed the appointment of Sean Kelly to the full-time role of Performance Lead with the Na Cait Óga.

Sean has been part of Kilkenny GAA since 2016, when he joined as a Games Development Co-Ordinator, before taking up the role of Athletic Development Lead in June 2023.

The new Performance Lead replaces eight-time All-Ireland winner with Kilkenny, Michael Fennelly who informed the county board that he would step away from his role on the conclusion of his contract back in July.

"Sean brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served with distinction since 2016, where he played a central role in supporting player development, strengthening athletic development structures and ensuring unified performance pathways throughout the county," a county board spokesperson said.

"Sean’s deep understanding of Kilkenny GAA’s long-term vision, structures, and performance pathways, combined with the strong relationships he has built with players, coaches and clubs throughout the county, made him an outstanding candidate for this leadership position.

"Kilkenny GAA looks forward to Sean’s leadership in further strengthening performance pathways and supporting excellence across all squads and development structures," they added.

Speaking on the appointment, PJ Kenny, Chairperson of Kilkenny County Board, said: "We are delighted to appoint Sean Kelly as our new Performance Lead.

"Sean has shown exceptional commitment to the development of our players and our performance structures in recent years.  He understands what Kilkenny GAA stands for and brings both expertise and enthusiasm to this important role. We are confident that he will continue to drive high standards and support the success of all our teams," Mr Kenny added.

"I’m honoured to take on the role of Performance Lead," Sean remarked.

"I’ve been fortunate to work closely with our players, coaches, and clubs over the past years, and I look forward to building on that work.  Kilkenny has a proud tradition and a strong commitment to developing our players at every level, and I’m excited to contribute to that ongoing journey," he continued.
