Calls for election poster restrictions in Kilkenny

Calls for election poster restrictions in Kilkenny

Local Green Party councillor and Chairperson of Keep Kilkenny Beautiful (KKB), Maria Dollard has called on election posters to be restricted to 'certain areas' as the countdown to the General Election on Friday, November 29 continues.

Votes cast in Carlow/Kilkenny on election day will be counted at the Loreto Secondary School Sports Hall, on Granges Road in Kilkenny City for the very first time.

Earlier this year, councillors in the Kilkenny City Municipal District voted not to erect posters in Kilkenny City centre during their local election campaigns following a motion raised by Ms Dollard.

"Many people consider posters visual litter or wasteful single use plastic unless they are reused and I’m glad to say most candidates did honour that request," she said.

"I personally don’t like posters and didn’t use any myself for the local elections campaign. I think in this day and age there are numerous ways to get your face known and posters are probably the low tech traditional way."

"Guidelines are issued to all candidates. It is a matter for the local authorities to ensure that posters are not causing an obstruction to traffic or pedestrians," Cllr Dollard continued.

"My personal preference is for posters to be restricted to certain areas as in many European countries. That way every candidate can have the same space in a designated area and that ‘visual litter’ is kept to a minimum and waste is reduced," the local councillor concluded.
