Fine Gael serve up a mixed bag in the Carlow-Kilkenny General Election

Last weekend was an historical one for the Fine Gael party on both sides of the coin.

In Kilkenny, Michael Doyle and David Fitzgerald’s failure to secure election means for the first time in the history of the State, the county will have no sitting TD.

A coalition partner place in government seems all but secured for Fine Gael but the position of Simon Harris as Taoiseach may be over.

However, in a positive first for Fine Gael and Carlow-Kilkenny, Catherine Callaghan from Carlow became the party’s first female elected TD in the constituency.

A former member of the Defence Forces, Callaghan missed out on a seat on Carlow County Council by just one single vote in June’s local elections in what has been a whirlwind few months for the new TD.
