Gardaí issue appeal following spate of burglaries in North Kilkenny

Gardaí in North Kilkenny are investigating a spate of burglaries and are appealing to the public for assistance.

At approximately 10.50pm on November 7 a male trespasser was observed at Oldtown, Ballyragget by the homeowner in the garage.

It is believed that this male entered and exited the garage through the side garage door.

Meanwhile on the same date another property at Grove Terrace in Ballyragget was also targeted by burglars.

Local gardaí are advising the public to light up and lock up their homes over the winter months, when burglaries traditionally tend to rise.

According to garda statistics burglars commonly target back doors (26%), back windows (24%) and front windows (8%), with one in five cases involving a burglar getting access through an unsecured door or window.

Castlecomer Gardai are investigating – seeking any witnesses, CCTV or any other information in relation to these incidents, to contact them on 056 4441222

Jewellery and cash remain the most common objects stolen, with €600 being the average value of goods taken.

Computers, mobile phones, TVs and games consoles are also among the top items stolen.

Nearly half of burglaries (46%) occur between 5pm and 11pm.

"If going out, homeowners should endeavour to make sure their home looks occupied - to Lock Up and Light Up. Use timer switches to turn on lights, lock all doors and windows, store keys away from windows and letterboxes, and use your alarm.

"Taking these simple steps will lessen a home’s vulnerability, deter burglars and protect homes," said a garda spokesperson.
