October 2018: The burnt out shell of the Bridge House, John Street, Kilkenny
Works to restore the badly burned-out Bridge House at John's Bridge in Kilkenny City should be under way in the coming weeks.
The historic structure was damaged when a blaze broke out back in October. Access is still restricted and hoardings are in place.
At the January meeting of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Malcolm Noonan commended the work of architectural conservation officer Francis Coady and the staff in the planning section. He asked if there was a timeline for works planned.
Senior planner Denis Malone said that the building had now been sealed from water. About three quarters of the ceiling in the main room has been saved and under-pinned.
Mr Malone said he didn't know if work would begin before the tourist season starts, but would be under way during it.
