A woman who admitted having heroin in her possession for sale and supply to others was sentenced to five months in prison, at Kilkenny District Court.

Bridie Devane, 27 Hoban Park, Callan, admitted having heroin in her possession for personal use and for sale and supply to others at Wolfe Tone Street on August 10, 2021.

Sergeant Morgan O’Connor told the court that on the date the defendant was observed driving the car on the Castlecomer Road. The court heard that the vehicle attempted to evade the gardaí and was stopped on Wolfe Tone Street. The car was searched and 18 bags of heroin were seized with a value of €500.

The court heard that the defendant has 13 previous convictions, including five previous convictions for road traffic offences and also for possession of drugs for personal use and for sale and supply to others. The defendant had subsequently received a suspended sentence for the drugs related offence.

Solicitor Ed Hughes said that his client has made significant efforts to turn her life around in the past six to 12 months and has not come to adverse garda attention.

“She is on a programme at the moment and is on a clear path. She tells me that she is on the straight and narrow and that she is making an active effort to cut drugs from her life. She is trying her best,” added Mr Hughes.

Judge Geraldine Carthy convicted the defendant and remarked that there is ‘no doubt that the facts before the court are quite stark’.

“I have to take into account the effect of the offences and I am satisfied that they merit a custodial sentence,” she said.

The judge sentenced the defendant to five months in prison for having drugs in her possession.

Recognisances were fixed in the case of an appeal.
