The freshly-laid and painted tarmac at Green's Bridge in Kilkenny City
There are currently no plans to reinstate the courtesy crossing at Green's Bridge in Kilkenny City.
The update was relayed to councillors earlier today at the most recent meeting of Kilkenny City Municipal District Council.
Director of Services at Kilkenny County Council, Tim Butler, told elected members that the local authority are examining other options to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the road.
He stated that the courtesy crossing that was in place on the road was causing confusion between some motorists and pedestrians on the issue of right of way, leading to hazardous situations.
Cllr Maria Dollard asked that the issue be prioritised.
"If you walk up from the skate park and want to continue walking over Green's Bridge you have to cross the road," she said.
"Pedestrians will not walk all the way down to the traffic lights near Vicar Street to cross," she added.
"I've seen people walking over the road on the bridge sometimes, and HGVs often come thundering over it, it's an accident waiting to happen and I'm really concerned."
