Parents of young girls were told in Kilkenny during the week that there are many parents in the south east who 'don't give a damn what their daughters learn at school or where she goes at night." In a hard-hitting lecture to the pupils of the Presentation Convent, Kilkenny, a Kilkenny priest hit out at "apathetic mothers" and slated mothers of young children who went out working.
He pointed out that parents by their behaviour often contradicted the very thing the child had learned at school.
"I know of parents who are too damn lazy to get up and go to Mass on a Sunday morning and are too busy in the evening getting ready to go for a drink," he accused.

"But yet they do manage somehow to push their children out to Mass on a Sunday. What's the point? As soon as they are old enough they are going to realise the hypocrisy of their parents' actions."
He added that another aspect of the new scandal was that instead of the husband coming home, as it were, maith go leor, they now had both parents coming home maith go leor. How could children living in this type of environment have any respect for their parents or, indeed, any authority, he asked.
He said that the working mother was ruining the economy of the country and was taking up a job of some young person. "Let's face it, if all the wives hold on to their jobs in this country there will be no jobs left for their sons and daughters."
