Works on the St Mary's Laneway and Outdoor Amenity Space Enhancement Scheme have moved to the next stage, with a contractor set to be appointed before Christmas.

Progress is continuing on a number of major public realm improvement projects across Kilkenny City, with several developments now moving closer to the construction stage.

Works on the St Mary’s Laneway and Outdoor Amenity Space Enhancement Scheme has moved to the next stage.

Tenders have been received for the project's construction and are currently being assessed.

According to a spokesperson for Kilkenny County Council, a contractor, subject to Department approval, is set to be appointed before Christmas.

The scheme will include the renewal of pavement, drainage systems, boundary treatments, street furniture and public lighting, as well as the installation of feature lighting.

Soft and hard landscaping works will also feature to enhance the outdoor amenity space around the Medieval Mile Museum. The construction also includes the provision of a serviced café kiosk and the automation of the pedestrian gate adjacent to the Tholsel.

Meanwhile, works on Kieran’s Street and Dame Alice Yard are understood to be ‘progressing well’.

The contractor is currently focused on completing the paving works on Kieran’s Street, with the aim of having the majority of the work finished ahead of the Christmas season.

When finished, the street is expected to feature a full street enhancement with new high-quality stone pavement finishes and an improved public realm, including seating, hanging baskets, and areas for planting trees and shrubs.

Groundworks and paving works are also currently underway in Dame Alice Yard as part of the ongoing improvement works in the area.

Furthermore, the detailed design work for the refurbishment of the Carnegie Library is continuing to progress, with a tender for the construction phase expected to be issued before the end of the year.

Last June, Kilkenny County Council signed a contract for the regeneration of the city library and its surrounding public realm, marking a step forward in plans to refurbish the historic building and improve the surrounding area.

The council penned the agreement with MCORM, who will lead a multi-disciplinary team in the detailed design of the refurbishment and redevelopment of the significant heritage project, along with the delivery of the works on site.

The project received €3.98 million under the THRIVE programme.
