A young rugby player with strong Callan connections is playing a key role in Ireland's quest for an Olympic medal at the Games in Paris.

Niall Comerford is part of Ireland's Rugby Sevens Olympic squad, and yesterday he bagged himself a try in the win over Japan, helping secure a quarter final spot for the Boys in Green.

Niall’s athletic pedigree is no surprise; his dad is Philip Comerford, is remembered for his achievements on the hurling field with John Locke's of Callan. Philip lives in Kildare and he is out in Paris watching his son playing in the biggest sporting event in the world. Niall's granny Nora, who lives in Kilbride, is also keenly following her grandson's exploits.

Ireland yesterday secured their place in the quarter-finals of the men’s rugby sevens with their wins over South Africa and Japan. They are back in action at 3.30pm today when they face top seed New Zealand. A date with destiny awaits, and no doubt all in Kilkenny will be cheering on Niall and the Boys in Green.
