This will be a ‘make or break’ year for the Beer Festival.

“During the past year the organising committee have put in an enormous amount of work into a new style of festival” said Chairman Sean McManus. “The changes we have made are going to cost us a lot of money.

“So it’s really make or break and, for that reason, we hope the people of Kilkenny will give the festival their full backing.”

With the changes Mr McManus feels that the new-look festival will be a bigger success than ever before.

“After 10 years I think we needed something different,” he said. “I have little doubt that the decision to change from an eight-day event to a six-day event will be widely welcomed and that the new variety programme in the Beer Tent will be well received.”

TUSSLE FOR SEATS BEGINS
First time candidates in the local elections, which takes place on Tuesday, June 18, will be required to lodge a deposit of £10 with their nomination. It will be forfeited by the unsuccessful ones if they have less than one-third of the quota at the time of their elimination. But in spite of this there is likely to be more in the field than on the last occasion in 1967. The three main political parties and Kevin Street Sinn Fein have a total of 60 nominations for the 26 seats. There will also be some Independents.

CHAMPION BOXER IS HOME
A man who emigrated from Ireland 16 years ago has returned as a heavyweight boxing champion.
Dave Cullen, Coppenagh, Graignamanagh spent eight years on the boxing circuit in Australia. He settled in New South Wales where, as a boxer, he got the opportunity to turn professional. He fought nearly 20 bouts and won the Golden Gloves competition for all the top boxers in the New South Wales province.
Leaving the fight business, Dave decided to work as a contractor for the Australian Government. Now back in Ireland, he hopes to find a boxer he can bring back to Australia to train as a top ranking boxer.

IRISH INTERNATIONAL
Ursula Grace has been picked for the Irish women’s soccer panel to play Wales at the Markets Field in Limerick on May 26. This will be Ursula’s first cap, although she was picked to play against Wales last season and was unable to travel.
This brings the number of Kilkenny international players to four. The others are Anne Griffith (Northern Ireland and France), Kay Ramsbottom (Northern Ireland and France) and Connie Jordan (Northern Ireland).
