Oscar Wilde's desk and bed amongst amazing lots going to auction in Kilkenny

A curated collection of rare antiques, historical treasures and fine art will go under the hammer at a major summer auction in Castlecomer, County Kilkenny this month.

The Summer Fine Art and Antique Sale, hosted by Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers, takes place at the Chatsworth Salesrooms on Wednesday and Thursday, June 18 and 19, beginning at 10.15am each day.

Among the highlights are Oscar Wilde’s writing desk and bed, early 19th-century celestial and terrestrial globes, and a bronze by Russian artist Evgeny Lanceray.

The lots are drawn from prestigious private estates and collections across Ireland, including the Patrick Walsh Collection of Dungarvan, items from the Butler family of Kilkenny and Tipperary, and pieces originally purchased at the Carton House dispersal sale in the 1940s.

Notable lots include:
Lot 906: William IV rosewood slope-top desk, c.1830, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and linked to Oscar Wilde.
Lot 907: Oscar Wilde’s French Bateau Bed, exhibited at the 1878 Paris World’s Fair.
Lot 673: Pair of large early 19th-century terrestrial and celestial globes on stands.
Lot 689: Louis XV Cartel Clock and Barometer by Julien Le Roy, Paris.
Lot 698: “The Cossacks Crossing the Balkans”, bronze by Evgeny Alexandrovich Lanceray.
Lot 836 & Lot 1037: Cervus Giganteus Hibernicus (Giant Irish Elk) antlers.
Lot 665: Folding screen “The Star of Bethlehem” after Edward Burne-Jones.
Lot 707: “Fishermen by a River at Sunset”, attributed to John Butts.
Lot 824: A collection of 89 late 19th/early 20th-century erotic Indian miniatures.
Lot 674: 1754 pocket globe by Nathaniel Hill.

The catalogue is now live on the Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers website with detailed illustrations and full descriptions of each item.

Viewing Times:
Sunday, June 15: 1.30pm–5pm
Monday, June 16 and Tuesday, June 17: 10am–5.30pm

Viewings and the auction take place at the Chatsworth Salesrooms, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny (R95 XV05).
