Allotment owners in Ferrybank in South Kilkenny have been left deeply frustrated following a disturbing incident of vandalism that has caused widespread damage and distress.
According to reports, the community’s grow tunnel was slashed open in multiple areas between July 24 and 25, with locks on buildings sabotaged using glue, leaving them inaccessible.
Spray-painted profanities and vulgar symbols further defaced the area, compounding the damage.
In addition to the property damage, many owners discovered their plants and produce had been recklessly destroyed, with no apparent motive other than senseless destruction.
Damien Donoghue, a Ferrybank resident who recently contested the local election, voiced his dismay at the developments.
“There are so many community members in Ferrybank doing incredible work recently so to see this is disappointing,” he said.
“A lot of older people especially get great use from the allotments and it’s very disheartening.”
The Ferrybank allotments have long been a point of pride in the community, and are well-maintained.

The allotment project previously secured first place in the Environment and Sustainability Category at the Kilkenny Community and Voluntary Awards, and it also was awarded the prestigious ‘IPB Pride of Place’ award.
The site also features a highly regarded community sensory garden.
The recent vandalism has cast a shadow over what has otherwise been a strong period of local achievement in the wider Ferrybank community.
Anyone with information regarding the vandalism is urged to contact An Garda Síochána.
